Thanksgiving Wine Pairings: A Feast for the Senses

Thanksgiving presents a delightful challenge for wine enthusiasts: selecting the perfect Thanksgiving wine pairings to complement a feast that ranges from the hearty, flavorful turkey to the sweet and tart cranberry sauce. With such a diverse menu, the ideal wine should enhance each dish's unique flavors. Washington wines, celebrated for their broad spectrum of profiles and distinctive character, emerge as a prime choice for this gastronomic adventure.

Washington Wine: A Harmonious Union with Food

Washington State, nestled in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, is renowned for its exceptional wine-producing regions. Its unique combination of climate, soil, and geography provides an ideal environment for growing a wide variety of grapes. With a focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly winemaking practices, Washington wines capture the region's essence while promoting eco-friendly viticulture.

Turkey and Chardonnay

Thanksgiving dinner begins with the star of the show, the turkey. To complement its succulence and richness, a classic choice is a well-chilled Chardonnay. The buttery notes in the wine harmonize with the turkey's flavors, making for a perfect pairing.

Cranberry Sauce and Pinot Noir

Cranberry sauce is a sweet and tangy side dish that often graces our Thanksgiving tables. A fruity Pinot Noir is an excellent choice to balance the sauce's zesty flavors. This wine brings a delightful red fruit profile and a touch of earthiness to the mix, creating a beautiful contrast.

Mashed Potatoes and Viognier

Mashed potatoes, creamy and dreamy, beg for a white wine with body and texture. Viognier, with its lush, floral aromas and stone fruit notes, is an impeccable companion to this classic side dish. Its subtle spice hints add a dash of complexity to the pairing.

Stuffing and Syrah

The savory and herbal character of stuffing pairs wonderfully with a bold and spicy Syrah. The wine's dark fruit flavors and hints of pepper stand up to the diverse flavors and textures within the stuffing. It's a dynamic duo that will leave your taste buds dancing.

Pumpkin Pie and Riesling

Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without a slice of pumpkin pie. Riesling, with its natural sweetness and bright acidity, complements the pie's sweetness and the subtle spice of its filling. The wine's citrusy notes provide a refreshing contrast.

Exploring the Perfect Washington Wines

Let's take a closer look at some of the fantastic Washington wines that can elevate your Thanksgiving experience:

Pacific Rim Riesling: This award-winning Riesling from Pacific Rim & Co. is a delightful choice for pairing with your Thanksgiving desserts. It's known for its vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity, making it a versatile option.

Rainstorm Pinot Noir: While technically from Oregon (the Willamette Valley to be specific) the Rainstorm Pinot Noir is an excellent match for Thanksgiving dinner. It boasts red berry flavors and a subtle earthiness that harmonizes beautifully with the roasted turkey and cranberry sauce. This wine adds depth and complexity to the meal, making it a standout choice for those who enjoy a lighter red wine with their holiday feast.

Silver Totem Cabernet Sauvignon: For those seeking a robust wine to accompany Thanksgiving's rich and savory dishes, the Silver Totem Cabernet Sauvignon is the ideal selection. With its strong structure and dark fruit notes, this wine stands up to hearty dishes like gravy, roasted meats, and stuffing. It complements the flavors of beef, lamb, and other heavier fare.

Thick Skinned: Pacific Rim's Thick Skinned wine is a unique and bold choice for Thanksgiving. With deep, complex flavors and hints of spice, it brings a rich character to the meal. It pairs wonderfully with hearty dishes, especially those with bold flavors and spices, making it an exceptional selection for those who want to explore a more distinctive wine experience during the holiday.

Sweet Wines (e.g., Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling):

Sweet wines, like Pacific Rim's Sweet Riesling, are the perfect finishing touch for Thanksgiving. The pleasant sweetness and crisp acidity of this wine harmonize beautifully with desserts, such as pumpkin pie and apple crisp. It provides a delightful contrast to the sweetness of Thanksgiving desserts, making it an ideal choice to conclude your festive meal on a high note.

How is White Wine Made?

White wine, with its crisp and refreshing taste, has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts worldwide. But have you ever wondered how this delightful elixir is made? In this journey through the vineyards and wineries, we will uncover the secrets of making white wine. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or someone eager to try their hand at winemaking, this guide will quench your curiosity about the intricate process behind crafting that perfect glass of white wine.

The Art of Making White Wine

The art of making white wine is a fascinating journey that transforms humble grapes into a symphony of flavors and aromas. From the meticulous selection of grape varieties in the vineyard to the delicate pressing and fermentation processes in the winery, each step plays a vital role in crafting that perfect glass of white wine.

So, how is white wine made?

The Vineyard - Where It All Begins

Making white wine is an art that starts in the vineyard. Just like a painter selects the finest canvas, winemakers carefully choose the grape varieties that will shape their wine. In the Pacific Northwest region, where winemaking meets sustainability, selecting the right grape varieties is crucial. Sustainability is at the heart of Pacific Rim & Co.'s winemaking philosophy. They understand that a healthy vineyard is the foundation of great wine.

Harvesting Grapes at Their Peak

The key to exceptional white wine lies in the quality of the grapes harvested. Timing is everything; grapes must be picked at the perfect moment when sugar levels are just right, and acidity is balanced. This harmony ensures that the resulting wine is well-rounded and full of flavor. Pacific Rim & Co. takes pride in their sustainable practices, which not only produce excellent grapes but also preserve the environment for future generations.

Gentle Pressing for Delicate Flavors

After harvesting, the grapes undergo a gentle pressing process. Unlike red wine, where the grape skins are left in contact with the juice to extract color and tannins, white wine requires minimal skin contact. This process preserves the delicate flavors and aromas found in white wine grapes. Making white wine is all about finesse, and Pacific Rim & Co. masters this art with their commitment to crafting wines that reflect the essence of the Pacific Northwest region.

Fermentation: Transforming Grapes into Wine

The fermentation process is the beating heart of white wine production, where the magic unfolds as yeast transforms grape sugars into alcohol, shaping the wine's character and defining its unique personality.

The Magic of Yeast

Fermentation is where the magic happens. Yeast, whether naturally occurring or added by winemakers, consumes the grape sugars and transforms them into alcohol. This stage plays a significant role in shaping the final wine's character. While some winemakers prefer wild yeast for its unique flavor contributions, others opt for cultivated yeast strains to maintain consistency. Pacific Rim & Co. carefully selects yeast strains that harmonize with the grape varieties they work with, ensuring each wine captures the essence of the Pacific Northwest region.

Temperature Matters

The temperature during fermentation is a critical factor. Cool fermentation preserves the delicate flavors of white wine, ensuring that the fruity and floral notes shine through. Pacific Rim & Co. employs modern temperature-controlled fermentation techniques to guarantee that their white wines retain their vibrant, refreshing qualities.

Aging and Bottling: Refining the Elixir

After fermentation, white wine typically goes through an aging process. While some wines benefit from oak barrel aging, others are aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve their fresh and fruity characteristics. Pacific Rim & Co. takes a tailored approach, carefully selecting the aging process that best suits each wine, all while maintaining their commitment to sustainable practices.

Pacific Rim & Co.: Perfecting the Process

So, the next time you savor a glass of white wine, you'll appreciate the journey it took from the vineyard to your glass. Making white wine is not just about science; it's about preserving the unique essence of the grapes and the region they come from.

Gewurztraminer vs. Gruner Veltliner: Comparing Tasting Notes Between the German Wines

In the world of wine, every varietal is a unique expression, a story told through the senses, and an invitation to embark on a flavorful voyage. Enter Gewürztraminer and Grüner Veltliner—two captivating white wines that embody the artistry of winemaking and the diverse spaces from which they hail. Gewürztraminer, with its opulent aromas and layers of floral and exotic fruit notes, beckons one to explore its enigmatic charms. On the other hand, Grüner Veltliner, celebrated for its vibrant acidity and dynamic flavor spectrum, invites one to savor its zesty personality. Understanding the tasting notes of the Gewürztraminer and Grüner Veltliner is one of the best ways to examine these Austrian and German white wine choices.

Gewurztraminer vs. Gruner Veltliner

Gewürztraminer vs. Grüner Veltliner - A Quick Background on Both

To begin to compare the tasting notes of these two wines, it may help to better understand the background of the two. Gewürztraminer is made from a white grape that has pink skin. It’s typically grown in colder climates, and while the Alsace region primarily claims it, it is also grown in the Rhine Valley. Over the last several decades, it’s spread throughout the world. Today, the United States is one of the largest producers. Grüner Veltliner is made from a white wine grape that grows primarily in Austria. In fact, it’s one of the most popular wines produced there, representing almost 30% of their wine products. This has not always been as popular as it is today. While many Europeans have enjoyed it for hundreds of years, in 2002, the English Master of Wine Jancis Robinson tasted one alongside many of the other most popular white wines in the world, and named it one of the best choices worldwide, propelling it to fame.

Understanding the Unique Flavor of These Two Wines

For many people, background is helpful, but the true selling point for a wine is the flavor the moment it hits your tongue. Gewürztraminer offers a fresh, light flavor. You’ll immediately taste fruit and flowers in one.  Grüner Veltliner, however, is a bit tangier. It tends to have a more savory flavor profile, and you’ll find notes of gooseberry, asparagus, and even ground peppers when you taste this option.

A Deeper Look At These Two Varieties

Besides the flavor, these two wines have a few other differences as well. Both Gewürztraminer and Grüner Veltliner are known for their aromatic qualities, but each has a distinctly different aroma. Gewürztraminer varieties tend to offer the scent of flowers and tropical fruits. Grüner Veltliner, however, usually features stone fruits, herbs, and a mineral quality.

Both Grüner Veltliner and Gewürztraminer wines can be versatile when it comes to food pairing. Grüner Veltliner's acidity and herbaceous notes can work well with a variety of dishes, including seafood, salads, and lighter meats. Gewürztraminer's aromatic and slightly sweet nature can complement spicy dishes, Asian cuisine, and even some desserts.

There is one key similarity between the two, though. Both Gewürztraminer and Grüner Veltliner can be crafted into a range of wine styles, from dry to off-dry to sweet. The winemaker's choices and the growing conditions play a significant role in determining the final style of the wine.

Serving These Wines

White wines like these should be served cold, but you don’t want them to be too cold, as when a wine gets too cold, the aromas are a bit more difficult to catch and the acidic flavors tend to be more prominent. As a result, the ideal serving temperature is somewhere between 44 and 50 degrees depending on the dryness of the variety you’ve selected. The sweeter the wine, the warmer you want it to be.

Don’t forget, too, that the glass in which it’s served matters. You’ll want to look for a high-quality glass that’s a bit thicker. There are glasses that are specific to white wines, and this is the best way to enjoy both of these options, as it will help you get acquainted with the depth of the flavors they have to offer.

Ready to Try Something Amazing?

Whether you’ve decided on the Austrian or German white wine, we have something amazing for you to try. Our 2018 Ramos Vineyard Gewürztraminer offers a spicy complexity you’ll love. The aromas of lychee and rose petals will touch you the moment you open the bottle. As you taste it, you’ll notice hints of passion fruit, melon, and tangerine.  This wine is so loved, it’s been given award after award among North American Gewürztraminer varieties.

Ready to try the Grüner Veltliner instead? Consider our 2018 Spring Creek Vineyard Grüner Veltliner. The single driest wine we make, you’ll find high minerality that’s carefully balanced with flavors like citrus and white peach. Ideal if you’re serving aromatic foods like lentils and chili, this is one that will complement your table again and again.

At Pacific Rim, we’re passionate about crafting world-class wines, and these two are no exception. Ready to order? Grab a bottle of both so you can hold your own tasting and decide which one best meets your needs.
