2016 Solstice Vineyard Riesling
Solstice vineyard is a special Riesling vineyard planted in 1972 in what we refer to as “the golden bench.” It is located on a perfect south – south east facing slope on the highest elevation available in the lower Yakima Valley (1,100 feet). At this elevation the cooler temperatures preserves the acidity of Riesling and the shallow soils makes vine struggle and express their minerality better.
Solstice produces a meager 4,000 bottles a year and has been recognized many times as one of the best Rieslings in the State of Washington and indeed in the world. We ferment Solstice with Native yeasts at 55F until dryness. The resulting wine is aged on lees for 6 to 8 months and the lees are stirred during the aging process. Most of the aging is in stainless steel though sometime part of the blend is aged in 40 year old oak fuders. Solstice does not go through malolactic, it is usually quite dry (6 to 7 g/L RS) and its extremely low pH (below 3.0 is not unusual) gives it an extraordinary longevity – 15 to 30 years.
